Toronto Rapper Drake made a hotel maid in Miami very happy last week when he surprised her with a massage, a dinner at a steakhouse and a shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue. And it was all due to him reading a profile piece written on her in a 2017 issue of the Miami Herald.
In the article, Odalie Paret explained how she has to take two two buses to get to work each day, and how the commute can take her up to four hours. She has been working at the luxury Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel for the past two decades, while raising five children. The Haitan-born Paret was surprised when a mysterious woman called her up on February 5th, and told her that she was being treated the next day to a massage at her place of employment and dinner afterwards. She didn’t know what to think of the offer, but took the woman up on it anyway. After dinner a car picked her up and took her to the local shopping centre where she waited until it closed. When it did, she felt a hand touch her shoulder and discovered her benefactor was none other than Drake, and American footballer Antonio Brown. They told Paret that she was able to go on a 45-minute shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue on them.
“I always just saw him on the TV. So I said, ‘Drake!’” Paret told the Miami Herald. “It made me happy… I thank him so much.”
In the end Paret picked up two pairs of pricey shoes, a $2,000 Valentino handbag, four perfumes, and a $6,000 white gold necklace with diamonds for a total of around $10,000.
Brown made a post on Snapchat in which Drake can be heard saying, “See what we’re doing, man? Took the ladies out for a nice little shopping spree today. Giving back, that’s what we do.”
This act of kindness isn’t the first Drake has been a part of in Miami. In the past couple of weeks he’s made a donation of $25,000 to Miami Senior High School and gave students clothes from his OVO brand. He also surprised a student at the school with a $50,000 cheque towards her University of Miami tuition. Shoppers at a supermarket were also shocked to find Drake paying for their groceries, which set him back about $50,000, before he donated another $50,000 to a homeless shelter.
Rumors suggest that at least part of the kind gestures are to be included in an upcoming music video the rapper is filming for the song God’s Plan. In the end though, it seems like Drake is genuinely giving from his heart with no ulterior motive. After the shopping spree he stated on Instagram that “Last 3 days were the best I have had in a very long time…there’s nothing like seeing people experience a joyful moment when you can tell they need it the most.”
