During Comic-Con this year Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made the announcement that not only will there be a special tribute episode of Riverdale in honour of Luke Perry, but that Shannen Doherty would also guest star in the episode to help pay tribute to her former Beverly Hills 90210 co-star.
Perry passed away back in March at the age of 52 after suffering a major stroke, and at the time Doherty publicly stated that she was “struggling with this loss” and that “processing (it) is impossible.” It’s no surprise therefore that Doherty has agreed to do the episode.
The tribute episode will be the season 4 premiere, and Aguirre-Sacasa stated that it will “reflect Perry’s enduring legacy and the indelible imprint his character” Perry played Fred Andrews, Archie’s dad, on the series. While no word has been given as to what Doherty’s role will be, Aguirre-Sacasa described it as “very emotional.” He also went on to say that he and Perry had been wanting Doherty to appear on the show since the first season.
“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role. She read the script and immediately said ‘yes.’ It’s very impactful,” said Aguirre-Sacasa.
Doherty is set to star in the reboot series “BH90210” later this year with other members of the original cast, including Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Perry was not originally part of the cast of the reboot, but he will still be honoured in some form or other when it does air.
